Senior Dog Home Safety Checklist

A room-by-room checklist to make your home easier and safer for an older dog. Print it, walk through your house, and tick off what's done. Most fixes cost little or nothing.

Floors and hallways

• ☐ Put a non-slip rug or runner on the paths your dog walks most: bed → water → door
• ☐ Rugs have rubber or grip backing so they don't slide when your dog steps on them
• ☐ Keep nails trimmed and the fur between paw pads short so paws can grip
• ☐ Wipe up water spills near bowls right away

Where they sleep

• ☐ A supportive bed (orthopedic foam) that's easy to step into, not a high-sided nest
• ☐ A non-slip surface next to the bed, where they stand up
• ☐ Away from cold drafts; many older dogs are stiffer on cold mornings

Stairs, couch and bed

• ☐ Block steep or slippery stairs with a baby gate when you're not there to help
• ☐ Add dog stairs or a ramp to the couch or bed so they don't jump down
• ☐ Carpet treads or non-slip strips on stairs they still use

Food and water

• ☐ Bowls on a non-slip mat so they don't slide
• ☐ Consider a raised bowl stand if bending down seems uncomfortable (ask your vet what height suits your dog)

Getting outside

• ☐ A ramp or steady steps at the back door
• ☐ A support harness with a handle for steps, slopes, and getting up
• ☐ A ramp for the car instead of lifting or letting them jump

You, the caregiver

• ☐ Lift with your legs, not your back; a harness handle keeps you upright
• ☐ Know your vet's number and the nearest emergency vet
• ☐ Watch for new signs: slipping more, trouble rising, reluctance on stairs. Mention them at your next visit
