Most of what ends up on your sofa is undercoat, not coat.
Double-coated dogs shed the soft layer underneath in huge volume, and an ordinary brush skims straight over it. You groom for ten minutes, the dog looks tidy, and the hair keeps arriving all week because the dead undercoat is still in there.
This rake reaches past the guard hairs and lifts that layer out. The difference in what comes off the dog is not subtle.
